The Author

Born in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec in 1968, Grant Hamilton went to a small high school with less than twelve people in his class. The small school environment had some advantages with his teachers being able to devote more time to his studies. His teachers encouraged his ambitions as a writer and subsequently one of his poetry works got published. This started Grant's passion for writing which he took with him to Ottawa where he finished his high school taking enriched English classes at Brookfield High.

During this time, fantasy books and board games were becoming very popular and were a heavy influence. Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Crystal Shard, and Dragon Lance were some of his favorite books and games. Grant graduated with two diplomas in Web Programming which resulted in his obtaining work in the government as a Project Manager working for National Defence and with Global Affairs Canada. In between his college years and work experiences, he also obtained a B.A. at Carleton University with studies in Film and English literature.

Grant was married in 1999 and had four children with one of his children, Gregory Hamilton, diagnosed with Autism. This resulted in his family re-inventing themselves, down-sizing their home and income with his wife leaving her job to home-school their son with special needs. Living with someone with high functioning autism opened Grant's eyes to a part of the world he never knew much about before. Now Grant sees himself as a champion of autism and as part of that challenge he made the decision to raise autism awareness by writing a fantasy novel that includes a hero with autism.

Grant also had the privilege to work for the Canadian Aids Society (CAS) for 1 year where he came to appreciate the tight knit LGBTQ community and its struggles with AIDS along with other issues like coming out or just being accepted outside of the community. It was this link with CAS that made Grant realise that as a writer he could not ignore the LGBTQ community and as a result he added a strong LGBTQ friendly element to his story-line dedicated to help raise more awareness. Even today in 2018 the struggles are still ongoing.

Finally, with global warming threatening our entire existence we need to speak up and  do more to protect our environment before it is too late. Grant has become more of an activist by including as one of his major themes a parallel to global warming in his story-line where pollution is chipping away at the world.

The Heroes of Karth series is the result of his experience and passion coming together like a perfect storm, creating a world for readers to enjoy and expand upon for many years to come.
